For Whom the Whistle Blows......

In honor of SpyDog's passionate and continuous charges of corruption among the BoA's majority opposition, we believe the timely suggestion offered this week by our good friends at the People for the Liberation of Overland should be of particular interest. PFLO has suggested a whistle blower law be considered by the BoA in order to provide an appropriate legal framework for Whistle Blowers to come forward in good faith in order to root-out corruption.

Under a Whistle Blower framework, individuals who discover corruption while also not possessing the..... "courage".... to report said corruption, would have a venue to report their experience without fear of retribution.

For example, let's say that Spydog worked for the City. Under a Whistle Blower Ordinance, Spydog could report any corruption or cover-up without needing to make gutless and un-substantiated rumors on his website. This type of process would enable Spydog to substitute a controlling legal authority for the lack of stones that Spydog continues to demonstrate in making these repeated charges. But, Spydog doesn't work for the City so he need not worry. Spydog also doesn't have any information that would be considered scandelous. Simply because he doesn't understand the changes in accounting proceedures resulting from the City no longer paying for trash-servicde doesn't a scandel make. So we need not worry either.

Another example can be drawn from the private sector. Let's assume you are working for Radio Shack. It comes to your attention that another employee is falsifying cell phone orders to inflate his commission. A common crime for a common criminal. Let's also say that this co-worker has stolen the identity information from official police records. A whistle blower policy would enable you to turn in the cowardly co-worker without fear of losing your job for doing so.

Without further adieu, we give you the POST OF THE WEEK!

Berkeley Financial Director was terminated today for failing to comply with a New City Ordinance requiring and Protecting Employees for reporting or failing to report wrong doing on the part of City Officials.

The Ordinance gives the employees protection from retaliation against them by Supervisors or city Administrators. It also requires the employees to report suspected misconduct to the administration.

This type of Ordinances extends the protection of the "Whistle Blower Act" to their employees. It also provides for punishment to the employees for making false accusations. All reports have to reviewed by the entire board so no one group has access to the information.

Maybe its' time for Overland to adopt such an Ordinance. The employees know what’s going on what’s wrong with them being able to expose wrongdoing.
