Smear Tactics: smear campaign or smear tactics are deliberate attempts by an individual or group to malign another individual or group's reputation.
Last night there was a textbook example of skidmark style smear...
On KSDK5 (the station that employees Chet Pleban mouthpiece Mike Owens) they ran this:
(KSDK) - An Overland city councilman is in trouble with the law. Glenn Corcoran is accused of writing a bad check in the amount of $115.88 to the Wal-Mart in Warrenton last September.
Prosecutors claim Corcoran wrote the check with knowledge there were insufficient funds in his account. When Corcoran did not show up in Warren County for a March court date, a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Richard Knode serves on Overland's city council with Corcoran. "He may have some problems he needs to work out, but he also needs to represent the people. And I believe you need to do the best you can in office because the people elected you to represent them," said Knode.
Reaction to Corcoran's situation is mixed among residents. 'I knew Glenn before he was a councilman and I never would have thought this would come from him. But the fact he's doing this now as a councilman is an embarrassment to the city," said Courtney Cerulo.
Jay Fetsch had a different take. "I'm not the one judging him. It's just not right. As far as I'm concerned he's innocent until proven guilty," said Fetsch.
Corcoran's listed phone number is disconnected and no one answered the door at his listed address. Passing a bad check is a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine and one year in jail.
Notice the names of the people interviewed for the piece, Knode, Cerulo and Fetsch.
Knode a member of the ORT and an opponent of Corcoran's on Overland City Council.
Cerulo(aka snoopdog) the city council chambers snacker an admitted Purzner supporter and mouthpiece for the ORT.
Jay Fetsh (aka Spydog aka piss pot Pete) runs the Overland chat website, drove a sign supporting the ORT around Overland last election day that violated election law.-- He admitted on his board that he was the owner of the sign. Re: THE SIGN WILL RUN

AH NO:. I paid for it and I will do it once more you remember the BIG sign that went around town.

So a news story that was broke by Pleban's mouhtpiece station adn not by any of the other news channels and the only ones who were interviewed for the story were ORT supporters. Does anyone have any doubt that this was an orchestrated smear campaign?
This concludes today's lecture on smear tactics. Discuss.

Definately a smear Joe.
Could Ann's latest strategem be to get an alderman removed or resign so that the council goes to 3-3 thus giving her tie breaking vote?
Pathetic.
Ann should cool her jets until Ken Owensby's hair-piece wins the open seat thus producing the advantageous 4-4 split.
Sorry for additional posting but I forgot to say that I could really give a rat's arse whether Mr. Corcoran passed a bad check to Walmart. If he was playing the float, who hasn't? If he was actually trying to rip-off same Walton for a cool hundred dollars, bully for him.
I believe we are in this mess because of the ballot box and will only get out of this mess through the ballot box. We should begin organizing for a recall effort.
Purzner's plurality rests on the twenty or so votes she found at the Group Home on Lackland. Without the unanimous support of the group home residents, Ann wouldn't be mayor.
I ask any of the astute observers here at the OVCC the following, were they going to pull this stunt at last Monday's meeting? Why would Pleban instruct Mike "the Hack" Owens to go public with the story when to do so would tip off Corcoran? Was the plan already foiled by Tuesday?
Could someone tell Sweaty Pickle that if Ms. Purzner has evidence of corruption among city officials she only need to produce such evidence to the St. Louis County prosecutor or Federal Bureau of Investigation in order to remove said corruption from City government. Mr. Branch I believe has deep experience in these areas.
When I see Ann on TV, I can't help but think of Captain Queeg:
"Ahh, but the strawberries that's... that's where I had them. They laughed at me and made jokes but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt and with... geometric logic... that a duplicate key to the wardroom icebox DID exist, and I'd have produced that key if they hadn't of pulled the Caine out of action."
Word has it that council person Corcoran has paid his fine and made good on the check with Walmart. So the situation is now closed. Guess the ORT didn't get the mileage out of this one they had hoped.
Greetings from Davis, CA. With any luck, I'll be home tomorrow.
Once again, Gravy is right on. The only long-term answer to this problem is the recall.
Bottom line, if Corcoran is writing bad checks, he gets what he gets. It would be a shame for us to lose this battle b/c we have put faith in someone who is violating the law. Do the crime and then we all do the time. If he has made good, let's move on but I don't think we should lessen our standards simply because he is against the Purz.
We need to start thinking long term and start MEANINGFUL efforts towards recall.
Lucky,
I appreciate your appeal to high standards. We certainly desire our elected leaders to be libetarian philosopher kings with deep respect for the republic's institutional framework best represented by your career, of course. But this person represents an "ideal type". We don't have the luxury of supporting only ideal types. Here we are twenty years removed from your velvet touch and we have yet to find a candidate to fill the vacuum.
Right now, we have to play the hand as currently dealt. Whether the Hand holds Kings, Queens or even a few Jokers, any semblence of rational administration rests on four alderman. Lose one, lose all.
I want everyone to know that I am working dilligently on getting the current voting calculus changed so that there is some "breathing room" if you will. I have opened a dialogue with Ken Owensby's Rug through several "back channels" in regard to his candidacy. He is open to voting against the ORT but insists on remaining independent. As he said, he always has been and always will be his own rug.
Spydog is saying it is so expensive for him to pay the $100 that our ISPs require for him to track us down. Otherwise, a chat room can be run virtually free or at least less than $100/year.
Secondly, there is a law that states you cannot arrest members of Congress on their way to a session. This was to avoid such hanky-panky as Ann was trying to pull--where you arrest someone to sway a vote count. Is there a similar law on Missouri books? Should there be?
