The only stats you seem to miss is the poster to username ratio, or PUR. The PUR measures the ration of people actually posting to the number of usernames posted under. The PUR is bounded by zero and one.
The PUR for the OVCC at the upper bound of one whereas the OverlandChat PUR is estimated to be less than .10.
When Carol stops lying, I'll stop pointing it out. I wish the lady no harm and have no knowledge of her outside Virtual Overland.

I normally could care less about businesses like this. It is a market many people have participated in for eternity and a huge number of American's will buy all sorts of "adult" products one way or another (many believe the revenues from adult entertainment built the internet into what it is today).
However, location is usually the key issue. No matter who you are, even if you are a regular customer of such establishments, you don't want it in your backyard.
It this case I have an issue with the proximity to a playground. I find it hard to believe there is not a better location in Berkley that is away from areas where children gather.
What I find most amusing is Larry Flint's quote: "There are no dancers, nothing offensive, no alcohol served to anyone,". Now Larry Flint, of all people, should know that if something is associated with sex in anyway there will be those who are offended by it. To suggest there is nothing offensive at this location is a bit much.
What I would like to know is what the reasoning was behind the Berkley City Council's decision to allow this business.

Point taken Kilvinsky. However, in the long term it doesn't always work out. Establishments like this often have a negative impact on the property values around them. Lower values mean lower revenue from property taxes. Though Municipalities do not get a huge portion of that tax, once the ball it rolling there could be a decline in businesses in that same area (less attractive area often means less business for a host of retail companies).
In the end there is the possiblity that the sales tax revenues for a new adult business could result in lower revenues over all from the area around it.
Of course there are a ton of factors. What specifically the business is (adult books vs. adult video booths for example) what the outside of the establishment looks like, and what state the surrounding community is already in all can play a part.
This type of establishment will start a chain reaction into Woodson Terrace all the way down Natural Bridge.

I have to say I am disappointed.
The only "scam" I can think of that you might be referring to is MAN ABOUT TOWNS suggestion that people would only get 25% of their utility tax refunds.
As I explained earlier, I was at that Council Workshop meeting and at NO TIME was a reduced utility tax refund for residents ever discussed. They did consider holding off on the refund process and doubling it next year (to possibly save time and money) but that was voted down.
The 25% number raised at that meeting in regard to the utility tax refund was an estimate of how many refunds they expected to process before this budget year ended in June. As I said before, that does NOT mean people won't get their refunds, it only means the City has to account for the remaining refunds in next year's budget because that is the fiscal year it will be spent.
So, other than it being horribly late, there is no change in Utility Tax refunds for seniors.
If the scam you are referring to is something else, than why not explain it so people can be better informed and take action as needed?
Sweetpickles, what does our City Attorney Herman have to do with the adult store in Berkeley or Overland? So what if Herman has a client that owns an adult store. You would be shocked at your attorney’s clientele list or any of our attorneys for that matter. Just because an attorney has a client that may be unsavory in your eyes, does not make them a bad attorney.
I for one would not be too jazzed about an “adult store” in my backyard, but if it’s in a business district and there are no problems with seedy characters, who cares. If the outside appearance of an adult store is kept up and does not have offensive advertising in the windows etc., it is just that a business. You do not have to patronize the business, it is a personal choice. I for one have never been in an adult store and wouldn’t know what one looks like inside. The closest I have come to being inside an adult store is Victoria’s Secret, which is in almost every mall in the USA.

NGiT personally, I could care less about the accuracy of an anonymous internet personality's claims of prior military service. There have always been those who attempt to build themselves up with fraudulent claims of military service, heroism, etc (Inside Edition did a piece on this recently link). This issue is aggravating for those of us who actually wore the uniform to say the least. However, when dealing with aliases on the internet how is someone supposed to know who is being truthful about anything?
I tend to stay out of such discussions because, in my personal opinion, they distract from the issues with real impact on those living in Overland.
Whether MAN ABOUT TOWN is a real vet or not is impossible for me to determine, so I don't see the need to waste energy on this or similar issues.
Right now my concern is that there is a "Scam" being perpetrated on the residents of Overland and the people claiming to be "in the know" about it will not tell the public any specifics. Without specifics, we residents cannot act to correct the situation. It boggles the mind why someone who suggest wrong doing but refuse to be any more specific than the word "Scam".

I have been on the Overland scene since late-1960s. I had never heard of Carol Sparks until a few months ago as a result of her compulsive and deceptive multi-posting on OverlandChat.

As I have explained before. It is perfectly OK for the Mayor, or in this case the President Pro Tem, to authorize advertisements for the election before an actual vote to hold that election.
If on April 23rd the Council had voted against holding that election this money would have been wasted. However, the Council voted Unanimously to hold it.
The City added the Election Notice to the City Website and Ran ads in the Post-Dispatch a week before that filing opened, the Suburban Journal that hit that Tuesday Evening and the Localite (BTW the Cut off date to file is usually a Friday so I assume it was the 20th). These were run to ensure that there was a proper announcement period before the filing date.
Finally, the City has a weird process of having a list to get on in advance. This process I assume began some time ago to avoid arguments about who was there first on the actual filing day. That list was made available on Thursday April 19th, which was after both the Post Dispatch and the Suburban Journal ads ran. However, unless you know Overland has such a list, you would not have known you could sign up on it before the filing date (and then camp out on City property from then until the filing opened to maintain your place in line).
BTW, I am not a fan of this "pre-filing list" being available so many days before the actual filing. 24 hours might be appropriate, but making it so people have to camp out on City Property for 5 days seems a bit ridiculous to me.
Now that I have answered your question on this issue FineWine (for the second time I believe) I was wondering if you would answer mine and tell me what the "scam" is that you were referring to earlier on OC?

Sailor, If I recall correctly the prefiling list came about after one candidate had waited for days and was then told he wasn't first in line (since they don't actually stand in line at the city hall doors). This, to me, seems like a good compromise and better than having a line of people outside the city hall doors, blocking traffic, for the five days in question. (Or even longer than 5 days if this process was not in place.)

They are trying to put Jerry May in a no-win situation. On one hand, he could be responsible and give appropriate notice for an already short-notice election. If he does, he faces the wrath of "acted without city council approval" (though the actions completely fall within the realm of his responsibilities).
Now, if he would have sat and waited until the council could meet and vote, there may not have been sufficient time to open the ballot and appear on the August election. Then, he would have been accused of trying to stay "in power" longer than necessary.
Again, trying to paint May into a corner. May did the right thing.
In regard to the Post Dispatch article, it sure is amazing what can be accomplished when there are competent people at the helm.

The person that posted the comment was Carol Sparks using her Blue Eyes character. She has also added a reply from her other favorite character, FINEWINE.
It is hard to keep Carol's personas straight sometimes which is why we all wish she would stop being so disingenuous by posting under several monikers and conversing with herself.
I personally would like to take Carol seriously and would do so if she could be genuine and stop replying to her own posts. How can you have an honest discussion with someone who can't present their thoughts in a straight forward and genuine manner?

Bear63114, park maintenance could be better in Overland, that's for sure. However, it all costs money in one fashion or another and there are some alternatives to consider that could make it better for less.
People wonder why Norman Meyer's Park is in such good condition. Some think this is because of favoritism on the part of the City. However, it is my understanding that much of it is done by the the Lion's Club. They use that park for their events, so they volunteer to do things to make it better (like a recent meeting where they offered and were approved to paint the fence at their expense).
Those of us that use the City parks should consider getting together. Perhaps the City could act as an organizational support structure for the creation of volunteer groups for each park. These groups could do minor maintenance (like trash pick up) and report larger problems (like uncovered electrical boxes).
When it comes to the bathrooms, there have been problems with them for years. It seems kids just love to flush all manners of thinks down the toilets damaging and even destroying them. This becomes expensive quickly.
Park guards might be an option (and would address more than just the bathroom issues), but even if we only manned each park with one person, during daylight hours we would be looking at a huge expense. At $25,000.00 a year per officer, the number needed to cover all the parks as well as benefits expenses and the like would cost somewhere around $200,000.00 - $300,000.00 a year.
Citizen involvement, thought local park groups could fill the gap. They could schedule volunteers to keep an eye on the parks and call OPD if there are issues like vandalism or criminal acts. Ultimately, a group of volunteers could fill the gap and probably do the job better as well.

Bear63114 I understand what you are saying about the bathrooms. However, if you had gone anywhere else like a store for example (many do not have public rest rooms) you would be in the same boat. There is something to be said for planning (like Dad always saying "you should have gone before we left"). :-)
When it comes to maintaining the bathrooms, it is one of those issues where the costs could be addressed in a different way. For example, though not as attractive, port-a-potties could be regularly delivered to the parks cheaper than the 10s of thousands we could spend constantly fixing the toilets and the like. Though they would be subject to vandalism, most notably being tipped over as well.
Then again, if strong park volunteer organizations were to form up, frequent vandalism at the parks could potentially become a thing of the past. They wouldn't stop it all, but they could make the problem small enough to be financially manageable by the City.

Rather than putting another burden on business owners in Overland, why don't you contribute something to the community and volunteer to clean the rest-rooms at Brooks Park.
You know after running a business for ten hours a day, five days a week, nothing a business owner looks forward to more than spending his free-time cleaning the public restrooms at City Parks.

Nothing at Brooks park in which a bull-dozer couldn't fix. How many housing plots could we fit into Brooks Park? With the sewer opening right there we could have another Cold Water Creek Estates development.
Anybody here know about the moral at City Hall Heard it is once again going down again and fast . I heard Boone really reemed the workers after he came back to work saying its his way or the highway. Nice job he is such a great manager and admired by virtually no one.
