Comparative Lit--Campaign Lit, that is!

In today's class we will learn about analyzing, as well as ethical aspects, of campaign literature. Let's compare two pieces of literature in the upcoming Mayoral election.

First, a letter sent in early June by the campaign of Mary Beth Conlon. Notice phrases like "proven track record of success" and the platform on the left of the letter. Anyone who has heard her speak since first running for city council in 2004 knows her dedication to obtaining grants and a committment to developing the Woodson Business District.

Next, an advertisement in the July Localite paid for by Mike Schneider's campaign. He, too, uses the phrase "track record of success" along with bullet points that practically mirror Conlon's campaign.
Now, I'm all for good ideas being used. But, I am also for giving credit where credit is due. After watching Schneider's two public forums, it was apparent that this guy didn't know the difference between community and economic development and thought Grant was the last name of that Lou guy on the mary Tyler Moore show.

Schneider plagiarized a lot Mary Beth’s literature, no doubt about it. The difference is Mary Beth has the qualifications and knows how to implement her ideas, Schneider doesn’t have a clue.

Thanks Suzy.

Would you happen to have Councilmember Keller's ad from the most recent localite to display as well? As I understand it there are alot of people who have yet to receive that issue.

ladyluck,
You're not missing anything. Keller's ad in the localite was empty and void of substance.
Keller's ad isn't worth Suzy's time, but I can't speak for Suzy.
But then again, it may be good for a chuckle or two.

Mauler and Doe Several weeks ago Conlon addressed the Records Center closing and the loss of the archives in her forum. She was right it is all closing. The other larger portion she said is slated to move to KY.

She gave a excellent presentation and discussion about it.

Moreover, she talked specifically about how it would directly impact the cities budget, what we should do to prepare for and it was discussed on several of of her slides. In fact her whole portion of Page and Woodson redevelopment was very specific about the impact.

Once again no one else can go into the detail as she does because they simply don't understand it.

Oh nobody tell Schneider and his crew or else they may copy that too.

Scheider is an uber Freeloader.

Whether freeloading on County Tax Payers or freeloading on Conlon's ideas Schneider is always ready to live off the work of others.

And he calls himself an entrepreneur's.

Wait for the debate, I can see a Captain Queeg style meltdown as Schneider attempts to add his understanding of Mary Beth's agenda to his vacuous Ritenour City delusion.

You can't cut and paste a formal university education into a persons head. Unfortunately you have to earn it.

Ladyluck,
I just finished scanning her ad. I was waiting to address this in another post. Possibly tomorrow or Saturday. (One issue at a time, right).
But, true that it lacked substance. For example, her "Platform" included "I am the only candidate presently not involved in a law suit(sic)."

This is wrong because by the time folks received/will receive their Localite the case will be ruled upon. Second, IS THAT REALLY A PLATFORM POSITION?
Oh lordy, I am practically putting my whole post here.

I believe Keller is demonstrating a steely political savvy rarely seen in someone so new to city-wide campaigns.

Keeping her ideas to herself is the most effective way to keeping her ideas off Schneider's campaign literature.

I know why Keller is so tight lipped she doesn't want her campaign literature stolen by Schneider either.

Oh sorry Gravy, Schneider is wearing off on me too I didn't mean to steal your thoughts.

Oh what tangle weaves we weave when we seem to be like a Captain Queeg.

The Caine Mutiny: Overland Redux

The first Captain, Captain de Vriess, (played by Bob Dody) is relieved by Lieutenant Commander Francis Queeg(Schneider), a strong, condescending, arrogant authoritarian figure whom appears at first to be just what the condemned Caine/Overland Covered Wagon and its poorly disciplined residents need.

However, as the Caine/Covered Wagon begins its missions, Queeg is soon regarded as a coward and incompetent, after running away from his personal property taxes, losing a gunnery training target by running over the ship's towline while disciplining a sailor and requesting a courtesy call from the enemy.

Queeg has a hissy fit, disciplines the morale officer and his bumbling attorney Beaver Schocker for a shirtail hanging out.

Queeq is given the nickname "Old Yellowstain" (not to be confused with his former/good friend he met with on several occasions while running for Councilman none other than "Brownstain".)

After Queeg see's the writing on the ORT Wall he decides to leave the Purzner camp and a yellow marker for the marines to land on enemy soil, but Queeg leaves too quickly to provide adequate cover for the COGG.

Tensions soon rise on the covered wagon due to Queeg's sub-par commanding efforts, perceived abuse of Collector of Revenue as well as some of crew, and the total non-support of the residents.

First officer Steve Maryk and Lieutenant Tom Keefer, who formerly worked as a magazine writer, begin to discuss whether Queeg has the mental problem of paranoia or just another example in a long series of self centered, inadequate, narcistic Overland Politicians.

The only thing I hope residents do not forget, is that Schneider DID NOTHING for Overland in the past yr.

Maybe I've forgotten, can anyone tell me what he's done for the city.

I'd like to include Keller in there also but to be fair she has only been a council person for what 2 mths. And SHOULD NOT be running at all.

T & C Mauler I agree with you to an extent, but I'd like to know how you get people from voting in the likes of Purzner, Owensby, Knode, Sellers & Keller, when it was obvious after the debate Oaks was clearly the more capable person. To get good people in they have to be voted in. And after the other 4 made it quite clear they had no idea how to run a city properly, people are still defending their actions.

Like I said before forget the names of the candidates. There is only one obvious choice out of the 3 & that is Conlon. But Keller will get votes & so will Schneider.

I don't get people.

Sorry, forgot to add Karr in there. She didn't have a clue & people voted for her. Why?

I love the script Truth. Let me know if you need any help in casting. I have been giving screen tests for my project and can refer several candidates for you.

I see a double feature in the offing.

We could do one of those outdoor theater in the park. Or better yet, we could start our own outdoor film festival.

Double Feature, Brooks Park at sunset.

Driving Ms. Keller followed by the COGG Mutiny.

Where is Van Johnson when you need him?

all cogged,

I guess the question is what did she or anyone else do about it. Pedicting it is going to happen is not the issue. The issue is what did the elected officials do to try to prevent it from happening? There is only one thing worse than not trying, its knowing about it and not trying. So the question is simple, what did any of the elected officials do to try to retain the employment in the area? Who exactly did they meet with? Who did they call? What were they told? What did they offer to try to keep it? The answer cannot be that the decision was already made b/c it was just announced THIS week that the GSA is builiding a brand new facility in north county.

When Chrysler was thinking about moving, Fenton went into action. What did Overland do?

Blogger All COGGed Up said...

Hey Mauler - True statement. That decision didn't just happen this week it has been going down for quite sometime. If you look at the website about it you can see the person involved from Overland was Roland Letner. Enough said. You can't do much if you aren't the one in charge and you aren't on the council when these decisions are being made.

Finewine,

If you don't like how the meetings are ran, seating arrangement, council workshop, the fact the meetings are orderly & business is actually getting taken care of, stand up & give a citizens comment. Or better yet call May.

Would you rather the meetings be like they were a year ago, screaming, insults, yelling at each other, no budget, no business conducted, & total disorder?

Which would you prefer?

Finewine or Blue Eyes,

When did you ever get a straight answer out of Knode, Sellers, Owensby or Purzner? Never.
